Framing Evaluation with Appreciative Inquiry

September 14, 2010
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Temple University Harrisburg
Barry L. Nazar, DPA, Facilitator
Cost: $20.00

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) program evaluation leads to actionable and measureable strategies to overcome challenges and reach new heights of accomplishment. This workshop presents the how-to and the advantages of “Appreciative” questions. When conducted properly, this type of inquiry reduces evaluator bias, yields richer information about programs, reduces fears about evaluation, energizes participants, and produces results that are more relevant and acceptable to stakeholders. AI questions focus on identifying and studying moments of excellence. They further solicit information about the processes and factors that make such moments of excellence possible. Finally, in the context of a program evaluation, appreciative questions provide feedback about what to do in the future to move toward improved outcomes. The participants will experience an exercise in the use of appreciative inquiry for a program evaluation. Participants will have a protocol for conducting similar strengths-based evaluations in their own agencies. Case studies will be provided to demonstrate the varieties of context for using this protocol.

Temple University Harrisburg

Recent studies find that nonprofit agencies with robust evaluation systems in place tend to have more stable funding, better developed human capital, and more active board directors. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the principles for design, measurement, data collection, analysis, and reporting for an effective program of evaluation. Perhaps even more important is that the workshops will address those challenges that typically interfere with implementing an evaluation system; i.e., time, money, staff, and data management technology.
